Located between Petroio and Trequanda, the ancient village of "Badia a Sicille" has very ancient origins. The first documented news of the church and the convent that was located here date back to 1,000 AD and on the church portal you can read the date 1263.
The name derives from the Etruscan toponym "Segnes", which through the Latin "Secennius" became the current Sicille.
The presence of the two Maltese crosses on the sides of the church portal suggests that the complex was founded by the Knights of Malta.
The facade of the church is Romanesque and the bell gable is from the 18th century. On the facade we also find the symbol of the Olivetans, an order to which the Badia passed in the 14th century, after the suppression of the Knights Templar.
Inside the church there are two 15th century frescoes of the Sienese School. On the right altar, Saint Benedict and Saint Sebastian, on the back wall the triptych of the Virgin with Child, Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The Etruscan cinerary urn found in a niche in a wall of the church is located in the Museum of the Confraternity of San Bernardino in Castelmuzio.
Adjacent to the church is the beautiful castle - farm dating back to the seventeenth century that replaced the hospice for pilgrims founded by the Templars.
