According to tradition , It seems that St. Francis retreated to pray in one of the caves on Mount Cetona: that’s why this church was built in 1367.
Before the church stands an arcade of Gothic style pillars, surmounted by a high bell tower. Its original interior structure includes three chapels on two levels. The lower chapel is entirely decorated with 14th century frescoes attributed to Cola Petruccioli, representing the Crucifixion, St. Francis’ stigmata, the Annunciation, and the Virgin Mary with the Evangelists.
In the upper part of the church, there are other frescoes attributed to Petruccioli, with Stories of Mary Magdalene and the life of the Virgin. Stories of the Passion of Christ , frescoed in another chapel are attributed to one of Petruccioli’s fellow workers.
