L'amore e la perdita spingono Arthur Brennan, interpretato sullo schermo dal premio Oscar Matthew McConaughey, a viaggiare attraverso il mondo per giungere in Giappone ad Aokigahara, una misteriosa e fitta foresta, dove la gente va a contemplare la vita e la morte. Arthur entra nel profondo della foresta e si perde alla ricerca del posto perfetto per morire. Quando lo trova, però, incontra Takumi Nakamura, un uomo giapponese che sembra aver perso la sua strada. Impossibile lasciarsi Takumi alle spalle, Arthur investe tutte le sue energie per riportare in salvo l'uomo. I due intraprendono così un cammino di riflessione e di sopravvivenza, che fa riaffiorare la voglia di vivere di Arthur così come l'amore con la moglie, interpretata sullo schermo da Naomi Watts.
