Madonna col Bambino e Santi, riassemblato Trequanda
Artist: Giovanni di Paolo
Current location: Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Andrea
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The polyptych depicts:
In the central panel: The Virgin and Child in Majesty surrounded by angels, with Saint Bernardino of Siena kneeling at her feet; at the top, in the spire: Christ Blessing In the left column, at the bottom: Saint Leonard; at the top: Saint Pope In the left panel: Saint Sebastian In the right panel: Saint Clement, Pope In the right column: at the bottom: Saint Sebastian; at the top: Saint Pope What is immediately striking is that the polyptych was dismembered before being reassembled in a way that appears completely inappropriate, as the articulation between the different panels appears crude, particularly in the central panel, which appears reduced in width. The work belongs to Giovanni di Paolo's so-called "bella maniera" period.
