Tempera on wood
The Madonna and Child with Saints by Sano di Pietro is a precious 15th-century work of art housed inside the Convent of San Bernardino in Sinalunga, on the Poggio Baldino hill.
It is a tempera-on-wood polyptych that has suffered severe damage and dismemberment over time. In the past, the side panels were even sawn off.
The work, stolen from the convent in 1971, was recovered by the Carabinieri Cultural Heritage Protection Unit after many years and returned to its original location.
At the center of the current triptych is the Virgin Enthroned with Child surrounded by praying angels, while the remaining side panels depict Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Jerome.
The saints cut away from the side panels are, from left to right:
Anthony of Padua, holding a flaming heart in his left hand,
Bernardino of Siena, wearing the usual monogram of Christ.
