DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
This important detached fresco, titled "Madonna and Child," was created in collaboration by the Sienese painters Cristoforo di Bindoccio and Meo di Pero.
The work is currently exhibited and preserved in Siena, at the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art.
The fresco originally comes from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo (also known as San Michele al Monte di San Donato).
The Latin phrase you quoted, "EGO SUM VIA VERITAS ET [VITA]" (I am the way, the truth, and the life), is a clear reference to the Gospel (John 14:6).
In the iconography of the time, this phrase is typically inserted within the unrolled scroll or open book held by Baby Jesus, to reaffirm his divine nature.
