Madonna sul trono col Bambino e i Santi Simone e Taddeo Sinalunga
Artist: Guidoccio Cozzarelli
Year: 1486
Current location: Convento di San Bernardino
Original location: Convento di San Bernardino
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The panel depicts:
To the left of the Virgin: the apostle Simon
Above the Virgin: God the Father in a cloud of angels
To the right of the Virgin: the apostle Thaddeus.
On the side pillars of the frame, the following six saints can be distinguished:
On the left, from top to bottom: Peter, Francis of Assisi, Catherine of Siena;
On the right: Paul, Bernardino of Siena, Apollonia of Alexandria.
God the Father appears amidst a halo of seraphim and opens his arms to the Virgin, whom he seems to welcome into his kingdom.
It is precisely in the scene of the Coronation that we contemplate the figure of the Virgin and Child at the moment when two angels are about to place the crown on her head.
Next to her are the apostles Simon and Thaddeus. Simon and Thaddeus, sometimes referred to as brothers, were killed, according to conflicting sources, after overthrowing the idols of Persian magicians with whom they had previously conversed.
In the lower part of the work, the predella features empty rectangular spaces, likely indicating the original existence of painted panels, now lost.
