Madonna del Rifugio Sinalunga
Artist: Sano di Pietro
Year: 1460
Current location: Convento di San Bernardino
Original location: Convento di San Bernardino
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Tempera and gold on panel
Legend has it that this image, venerated in Sinalunga, was a portrait of the Virgin painted by the Evangelist Luke, which Blessed Pietro Fratangioli of Trequanda brought back from his pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
More likely, it was Fratangioli himself who donated the parchment image, created in 1460 by Sano di Pietro, to the convent where he spent part of his life.
The title Madonna of Refuge refers to the Virgin's role as intercessor and refuge for all sinners, to whom she promises her protection.
This type of figure, though quite common, has not given rise to any distinctive iconographic characteristics.
In fact, representations of this type of devotional image are often very similar to those of the Virgin of Mercy or Mary Queen of Heaven.
