DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Tempera and gold on panel, 63 x 46 cm.
This work, intended for the high altar of the church of Sant'Eugenia, despite its small size, is one of many variations on the theme of the Virgin and Child surrounded by saints and angels created by Matteo di Giovanni in the final years of his career.
Here, the Virgin, cradling her Son, is surrounded by two saints whose identity is not easily discernible due to the relatively subtle clues left by the painter; so much so that the title of the work may vary from one citation to the next.
As for the saint on the right, he most likely represents Margaret of Antioch.
On the left, the saint with graying hair, revealing a fold of his pink cloak, is more similar to John the Evangelist than to Jerome.
