Battesimo di Gesù Sinalunga
Artist: Guidoccio Cozzarelli
Year: 1470
Current location: Convento di San Bernardino
Original location: Convento di San Bernardino
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Tempera on wood
The Holy Spirit hovers, as it should, in the firmament above the scene. A supernatural light emanating from the infinite circle through which the dove descends toward us seems to be the source of the moonlight that illuminates the figures and casts a soft glow on the distant landscape.
Among the three angels witnessing the scene, one wears Christ's tunic, which he removed for his baptism.
Saint Jerome, wearing the red cardinal's cloak over his monastic habit, takes notes before the spectacle, perhaps to better describe it later.
Saint Nicholas in prayer, recognizable by his bishop's robes, is as much a symbolic witness to the unfolding event as Jerome.
This altarpiece of the Baptism of Christ is unanimously considered Guidoccio Cozzarelli's masterpiece.
