STRUCTURE DESCRIPTION

San Gregorio Company extends on the hills around Chiusi, in the southern part of Siena province. We know its history from 1700: San Gregorio farm, in fact appears in a document of that time among the properties of the nuns’ cloister of Chiusi. The two original buildings go back to that period: the first one, converted in vineyard in 1960, keeps the original structure. Only the perimeter walls and the arches of the local that was used as stable at that time.
The structure was that one of a typical Tuscan farm: the stable on the ground floor, the house on the first floor with external steps and a lodge, a hut with the tools at its side. Era presente anche la fossa per il grano, ritrovata casualmente There also was the pothole for the wheat, found by chance during the building of a barrel, under the earthen floor of the hut. The pothole was closed by a heavy manhole made in stone, covered in turn by earthen floor.
The other building, instead, keeps the whole original structure: unusual structure in the Tuscan countryside. It is a very regular and modular structure, quite different from the typical farm, that was maybe used as habitation for season workers (while the tenant family lived in the farm). Recently the unit formed two farms (San Gregorio and Fossone), where two tenant families lived. Today the new building consists of two flats on the first floor for the employee of the company and a warehouse and the room of bottling-in on the ground floor. The building was completely restored in 1997. Chianti dei Colli senesi is produced in the lands of Siena province. From these lands, in the south-eastern area of the province, and more precisely in the commune of Chiusi, Chianti della fattoria di San Gregorio is produced, made of grapes that come exclusively from the vineyard of the company.
