The castle and rural village below is situated in a position overlooking the Val di Chiana. The construction of the castle and the walls is owed to the Florentines; up to the mid 16th century it performed military functions bound to the interests of Florence in this area. Later, Oliveto kept one of its roles as a small, rural garrisson favoured by the fruitfulness of the hilly ground, especially for the production of oil and wine, like the neighbouring village Ciggiano. Besides some significant remains of the walls (in particular the gate with the keep at the north) we recommend the church of S. Andrea, whose historical data goes back to 1300, the 19th century building of the farm and the 17th century Villa Mazzi, now used as a nursery school.
Between the religious buildings "Tabernacolo della Madonnina" stands just outside of the walls, transformed into a small chapel during the 19th century. In the neighbourhood of Oliveto, there is a place called Castellare, since the 6th century a fortified settlement first occupied by Byzantines and then by Lombards, where evidence of the late imperial era has been found.
