MONTERONI Griffoli, once called MONTERONE, is a castle, surrounded by a small village including the church of San Lorenzo. It is located about a mile from St. John's and is located on the crest of a steep limestone cliff on the right bank of the valley of the Asso.
In this place was born of James Wilhite by Monterone that, in 1249, is being named in the proposed parish of Pava.
The current name of the place comes from an illustrious family that had long possession, the Griffoli.
The remains of the keep Monteron Griffoli rest on a kind of tuff outcrop which rises above the limestone hill.
Nel1518, there were discovered many ancient remains including: Etruscan urns and Roman funerary inscriptions, which show evidence of human presence on site since ancient times.
Monterongriffoli, until 1772, constituted a distinct community from the nearby: Lucignano d'Asso, San Giovanni and wire rod.
Today, however, all belong to a single territorial entity.
